Scripture Reference: Mark 6:24–25

The relationship between a mother and her daughter is powerful. A mother can shape her daughter’s character, influence her decisions, and help guide her spiritual journey. But what happens when a mother’s influence leads her daughter in the wrong direction?
The Bible gives us a sobering example through the story of Herodias and her daughter.
In Mark 6:24–25, Herodias’ daughter asked her mother what she should request from King Herod after her dance pleased him. Herodias replied, “The head of John the Baptist.”
Her daughter followed her instruction and asked for John’s head on a platter. Herod then ordered John’s execution.
As I read these verses I was drawn into the words as Holy Spirit highlighted them. We should be cautious of those who are likened unto Herodias, using her daughter to carry out her evil desires.
What a tragic example of a mother’s influence!
1. A Mother’s Words Carry Weight
Herodias’ daughter went to her mother for guidance, but the advice she received was driven by her mother’s bitterness toward John the Baptist.
This reminds us that daughters often look to their mothers for direction. A mother’s words can encourage wisdom and righteousness, or they can influence a daughter toward harmful decisions.
Mothers must be careful about the advice they give because their daughters may trust their words without questioning their motives.
Proverbs 31:26 reminds us that a virtuous woman speaks with wisdom and kindness.
2. Do Not Pass Your Bitterness to Your Daughter
Herodias held a grudge against John because he confronted her about her relationship with Herod. Instead of accepting correction, she wanted revenge.
Sadly, her bitterness influenced her daughter.
Mothers must be careful not to make their daughters carry their personal hurts, grudges, or conflicts. A daughter should not be expected to take revenge on someone simply because her mother has been offended.
Ephesians 4:31–32 teaches us to put away bitterness, anger, and malice and to practice kindness and forgiveness.
Your daughter needs your wisdom, not the burden of your bitterness.
3. Love Your Mother, but Exercise Discernment
This story also teaches daughters an important lesson: respecting your mother does not mean blindly following every instruction.
A daughter can love and honor her mother while recognizing that some advice may be wrong. We must learn to measure the guidance we receive against God’s Word.
Acts 5:29 says, “We ought to obey God rather than men.”
A healthy mother-daughter relationship should encourage honesty, wisdom, and spiritual growth—not fear, manipulation, or blind obedience.
4. What Are You Teaching the Next Generation?
Children learn not only from what parents say but also from what they see.
If a mother responds to hurt with bitterness, her daughter may learn to do the same. But when a mother demonstrates forgiveness, integrity, kindness, and faith in God, she gives her daughter a valuable example to follow.
No mother is perfect, but every mother can choose to grow, acknowledge mistakes, and use her influence responsibly.
The goal is not simply to raise a daughter who listens to you, but to help raise a woman who knows how to choose what is right before God.
The story of Herodias and her daughter reminds us that a mother’s influence can have lasting consequences.
Herodias used her influence to advance her bitterness, and her daughter followed her direction. This tragic account challenges mothers to examine the values they are passing on and challenges daughters to exercise discernment in the decisions they make.
Mothers, guide your daughters with wisdom, love, and godly counsel. Daughters, honor your mothers while remembering that God’s truth must guide your choices.
Let us break the cycle of bitterness and pass down faith, kindness, courage, and righteousness instead.
A mother’s influence can leave a lasting imprint on her daughter’s life. May that imprint lead her closer to God, not further away from Him.
No matter what age your daughter maybe , it’s never too early or too late to have conversations that leads them onto the right path. Teach them about loyalty, teach them about integrity but also teach them to lean on Holy Spirit for His discernment in a situation.
A Short Prayer
Heavenly Father, give mothers wisdom to guide their daughters with love and truth. Help daughters recognize godly counsel and make choices that honor You. Heal strained relationships, remove bitterness, and help us pass down faith, kindness, and righteousness to the next generation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection question: What attitudes and values am I passing on to my daughter through my words and actions?
I pray this ministers to you .
Shalom Shalom,
